PCOE 5270 - Phonics and The Structure of Language


Provides critical information about the foundations of teaching phonics, systems of language and structured literacy practices. Teacher candidates explore research studies that investigate how children learn to read and examine education policies that shape current reading education approaches. In addition, teacher candidates investigate the historical, linguistic, and instructional frameworks related to phonics skills and development and learn to differentiate instruction to accommodate to the needs of all learners.

Learning Outcomes:
 

  • Students will be able to articulate the development of phonological awareness, phonics, word identification, and spelling knowledge and skills.
  • Students will be able to design instructional activities to teach phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition systematically.
  • Students will be able to build a literature-rich environment that supports language and literacy learning for all students.
  • Students will be able to administer, interpret, and share results of various types of literacy assessments with colleagues and families.
  • Students will be able to differentiate instructional practices to accommodate different learners’ learning needs.
  • Students will be able to analyze assessment results to plan instruction.
