PCOE 5919 - Curriculum and Instruction


This self-paced course is part of a 15-hour professional development institute (PDI) for secondary teachers and an 18-hour PDI for intervention specialists, elementary and middle school teachers designed to enable in-service teachers working under an Ohio Department of Education issued Alternative License to meet the state requirements for a 5-year Professional License. Content is focused on national, state and local curriculum requirements, developing appropriate, rigorous, and measurable instructional objectives, creating long term and intermediate term units plans while using instructional objectives and district and state approved academic content standards. Adaptations and curricular modifications based on student needs, choosing and aligning appropriate curriculum materials, and how high stakes testing impacts curriculum development are stressed, as will how curriculum development aligns with the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to articulate and identify the differences between historical and contemporary principles of curriculum.
  • Students will be able to identify the Ohio Learning Standards targeted to their grade level band.
  • Students will be able to develop appropriate, rigorous, and measurable instructional objectives.
  • Students will be able to use data to inform curricular decisions.
  • Students will be able to choose appropriate curricular materials.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast curricular models, including Ohio’s model curricula.
  • Students will be able to identify the benefits and constraints of high stakes testing related to curriculum development.
