PCOE 5917 - Classroom Management and Student Assessment


This course is part of a 15-hour professional development institute (PDI) for secondary teachers and an 18-hour PDI for intervention specialists, elementary and middle school teachers designed to enable in-service teachers working under an Ohio Department of Education issued Alternative License to meet the state requirements for a 5 year Professional License. This course focuses on the Seven Ohio Standards for the Teaching profession reflected in the state mandated Resident Educator assessment and their alignment with classroom management and assessment. This course is intended for multiple licensure bands and content areas. Content is focused on instructional and assessment strategies, designing and maintaining a positive learning environment, classroom management and positive discipline strategies, and teacher reflection. Effective collaboration strategies, accessing related and support services, and skills necessary for effective instruction and assessment within an inclusive classroom are reviewed. Strategies for methods of direct instruction, and effective classroom interaction are also explored.

Credit Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate the influences of societal issues on student behavior.
  • Students will be able to identify developmentally appropriate consequences for children of different ages.
  • Students will be able to describe ways of addressing student misbehavior, including trauma informed choices.
  • Students will be able to identify and demonstrate skills of effective classroom management.
  • Students will be able to articulate a personalized plan for addressing classroom management and discipline issues present in their current classrooms.
  • Students will be able to describe how Positive Behavior Support Plans can be used as positive management strategies at the building and district level.
  • Students will be able to describe the influences a teacher has in making curricular and instructional and assessment choices.
  • Students will be able to recognize instructional and assessment strategies.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe issues and challenges facing education that pertain to academic content standards and high stakes testing.
  • Students will be able to identify the legal issues inherent in the IEP process and respond appropriately in providing accommodations in student assessments and activities.
