PCOE 5907 - Trauma Informed Practice for Mentor Teachers in P-12 Settings


This professional development workshop is designed for P-12 teachers working with students and families who have experienced trauma and substance abuse. The modules focus on the role of teachers in recognizing warning signs of substance abuse, implementing prevention efforts, promoting social/emotional learning competencies (SEL) in the classroom, and helping students develop individual and relational resources. This module compliments the HOPE (Health and Opioid Prevention Education) curriculum funded by the Ohio Department of Higher Education and developed by health educators and classroom teachers. At the completion of the 15 clock hours of online facilitated learning and assignments, participants receive a Certificate of Completion and one semester hour of graduate credit. This workshop cannot be used toward any Ohio University degree requirement.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify risk factors and typical warning signs of substance abuse in families.
  • Students will develop and implement their own plans for developing social and emotional learning competencies within the classroom setting.
  • Students will develop a comprehensive list of local resouces that can be utilized as a tool to be shared with families and/or other support staff within the school setting.
