HIST 5770 - The Holocaust


The origins of antisemitism in the West, Nazi ideology and the development of Nazi genocide, the reactions, including resistance, of European Jews, and the actions and inactions of bystander groups, connections between the Holocaust and Nazi persecution of other groups (Roma, Slavs, homosexuals, etc.) in the same period.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to recognize one’s own ethical core beliefs and how they shape ethical conduct and thinking by using Nazi antisemitism and persecution of the Jews as a starting point for reflection.
  • Students will be able to understand ethical perspectives, theories, and/or concepts while focusing on the Nazi worldview and its connections to Nazi violent behavior.
  • Students will be able to recognize, evaluate, and connect ethical issues by examining and analyzing a range of primary documents connected to the Nazi persecution of the Jews.
  • Students will be able to apply ethical perspectives, theories, or concepts to a decision-making situation by focusing on how Nazi prejudices and spurious claims against the Jews enabled the Nazi genocide of Jews.
  • Students will be able to evaluate alternative ethical perspectives within a decision-making situation by examining the moral and ethical dilemmas experienced by Jews under the impact of Nazi persecution.
  • Students will be able to analyze, discuss, and critically evaluate sources related to ideology, violence, and ethical issues related to the Holocaust.
