HIST 5681 - Modern Germany in the 20th Century Germany on eve of WWI; military fiasco and creation of Weimar Republic; Weimar, Berlin, Munich, and Dresden; attempt to forge democracy; Third Reich and transformation of German society; WWII and Final Solution; Communist Germany and Federal Germany; two societies and two states since 1945; unified Germany since 1990.

- Students will understand the forces that shaped the rise and fall of Germany.
