HIST 5231 - Latin American History: From Independence to the Present Examines Latin American history in the 19th- and 20th- centuries, focusing on causes and consequences of Independence; the political, social and economic challenges of nation-state formation; competing political/ideological responses to structural crisis in the 20th- century (social revolution, authoritarianism, democratic change); and ongoing search for viable formulas of economic development.
