Program Overview: Prospective students with a previous graduate degree (e.g. law, business, or other approved graduate degree) or significant industry-related experience may be considered for the one-year Master of Sports Administration (MSA) program. The MSA only option requires the completion of 36 credit hours over three academic semesters. Six credit hours will be applied toward a required internship. Individual programs can be tailored to each student’s needs, experience, and career goals. Courses are chosen from the same Sports Administration offerings as the dual-degree seeking students, in addition to outside electives.

Admissions Policy: Admission to the MSA-only program is highly selective. Like other highly specialized graduate programs, it requires an excellent academic background. Previous work experience is preferred. Specific requirements are:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum overall grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • A submitted score from the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), or (for students applying from the Capital University Law and Graduate Center) the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT).
  • Three letters of recommendation: one from an individual who can attest to qualifications in the field (for example, an athletic director or arena manager). The other two may come from an undergraduate or graduate advisor, present employer, instructor in the field of study, and/or civic leader.
  • A two-page, double-spaced statement of professional goals that includes background, experience, and involvement in sports and related activities.
  • A current resume.

International Students have additional admission requirements. Please the Sports Administration office at (740) 593-4666

Change Policy: The MSA-only program does not accept transfer students. Ohio University graduate students wishing to enroll in the MSA-only program must follow normal application procedures. Students accepted into the MSA-only program may have the opportunity to apply up to 9 semester hourss earned in another Ohio University graduate degree program.

Transfer Policy: The MSA-only program does not accept transfer students. Graduate students from other universities, who wish to enroll in the MSA-only program, must follow normal application procedures.

Opportunities: Graduates of the MSA program work in all areas of sports administration, including intercollegiate athletics; professional sports teams, leagues, and tours; motorsports; athletic and entertainment facilities; advertising and sport marketing agencies; and sport businesses. Currently, over 80% of MSA graduates work in sport and sport-related industries
