Hearing Science (Ph.D.)

Program Overview: The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a Ph.D. in hearing science which is designed to develop students into strong, independent and productive researchers who will pursue careers in academics, research or industry.

Admissions Policy: Qualified applicants will have strong interest in becoming increasingly independent scholars, and excellent written and interpersonal communication skills in American English. Applicants must have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in an academically related area (e.g., communication sciences and disorders, psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, biomedical engineering, etc.). U.S. and International applicants and applicants from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

To be considered for Ph.D. study, applicants must submit the following:

  • An Ohio University graduate application form.
  • All past academic transcripts.
  • Three letters of recommendation (including at least one from the student’s master’s degree program, if applicable).
  • Official Score Report from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • A two- or three-page narrative detailing previous experience and long- and short-term career objectives.
  • International applicants must additionally submit an English proficiency score (TOEFL or IELTS) and a CD sample of spoken English.

Transfer Policy: Requirements for transfer are the same as for admission.

Opportunities: Upon graduation, students with the Ph.D. in hearing science are strongly competitive for academic posts to pursue academic-research careers and research careers in industry.
