Family Nurse Practitioner

Program Overview: The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) option prepares professional nurses to function as a primary health care provider. The student completes a core set of courses of 23 credits and 16 credits specific to the content required by FNPs.

Admissions Policy: Freshman are not admitted to this program. Students seeking admission to the MSN Program must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a registered nurse (RN) with a currently active license in Ohio or its equivalent.
  2. Have completed a baccalaureate degree.
  3. Have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 in the BSN or equivalent baccalaureate program.
  4. If the undergraduate grade point average is below 3.20 on a 4.00 scale complete the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Millers Analogy Test.
  5. Have documented completion of introductory coursework in management, statistics, and research.

Change Policy: No selective or limited admission requirements.

Transfer Policy: Transfer work for MSN students follow Ohio University policies for graduate-level transfer credit: Courses must have been taken within the past five years. The courses had to have been graduate level courses acceptable for degree credit at the previous institution and completed with a grade of “B” or better. Contact the Associate Director of the MSN Program for additional details. No more than eight (8) semester credits of work can be transferred.

Opportunities: Graduates of the FNP program will be eligible to sit for either of the national certifying examinations. They are eligible to apply for prescriptive authority after the certifying examination is passed. They will work with physicians in a variety of health care settings as the primary health care provider for members of the families seen in their practice.
