Athletic Administration (online)

Program Overview: The MAA online degree program is specifically designed for interscholastic athletic professionals (and individuals who have athletic administration, coaching, or related experience) who aspire to be leaders of first-class athletic programs and who strive to make a difference in the lives of young people. The program offers a convenient learning experience for interscholastic athletic professionals seeking to further their careers through practical knowledge and competencies. It is designed to provide students advanced opportunities working through realistic challenges and integrating learning experiences into their professional experience. The MAA program is also a lock-step, cohort-based program offered in a blended format. It requires students to attend an Athletic Leadership Forum on the Ohio University Athens campus during one summer term. The remainder of the instruction is provided online. The program can be completed in two years.

Admissions Policy:

Specific requirements are:

  • Proof of undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or University
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale in the last 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours
  • Minimum of two years of interscholastic athletic administration, coaching or related experience
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required but will be considered, if submitted. 

Submit for Application:

  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must come from an immediate supervisor, one of which must come from a current or former interscholastic athletic administrator, and one of which must come from an individual who can speak to the candidate’s ability to handle graduate-level coursework.
  • A two to four page essay discussing your career goals, how the master’s degree will help you achieve those goals, and areas or competencies that your expect the program will help you to strengthen.

Change Policy: The MAA program is a lock-step program and does not accept transfer credits from other graduate programs within Ohio University.

Transfer Policy: The MAA program is a lock-step program and does not accept transfer credits from another institution.

Opportunities: The MAA program at Ohio University prepares students specifically for positions in interscholastic athletic administration. Potential jobs following graduation include athletic director at a high school or middle school, district athletic administrator, and administrator of a state high school athletic association.
