Program Overview

To receive a B.S.Ed. in Special Education and licensure as an Intervention Specialist, you must complete one of the professional preparation programs for teaching students with special needs and receive passing scores on the Praxis II exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA). Students should also use the four-year plan on the program website and/or consult with their advisor about scheduling as early as possible. Mild to Moderate majors are advised to complete content courses in either science, social studies or mathematics to pass the MCE PRAXIS content tests and the reading PRAXIS to have 2 HQT areas upon graduation.
 

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

As with all majors in Education, candidates must meet the requirements for Professional Education. In addition, those wishing to enter special education programs must also submit an application for Selective Admission in Special Education during Fall semester of the sophomore year and be accepted and eligible (meet all requisites) for entry into their junior year Special Education Block 2 courses.

Enrollment in these programs is limited to promote quality instruction, appropriate field placement, and effective advising. The selective admission process for Special Education includes application for admission to Professional Education, review of your academic record, and your professional statement. Admission applications are available on the Web and should be returned to the Office of Student Affairs in McCracken Hall. Application deadlines are posted on the e-News and are usually set during priority registration week.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Upon successful completion of this program and passing scores on the state licensing exams, individuals are eligible to hold K-12 public school teaching positions as an intervention specialist. Some individuals work in non-public schools and other agencies that service individuals with disabilities.

EDSP Concentration Electives


In consultation with your academic advisor, complete 15 semester hours in content courses in one of the following Middle Childhood concentration areas: science, mathematics or social studies. Note: one of these courses must be an elective Tier II course; this is in addition to your 2FA and 2NS courses.
