Program Overview

The medical assisting technology (MAT) program prepares competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The curriculum covers administrative and clinical tasks found in ambulatory health care. Upon graduation, a student may sit for the CMA (AAMA), examination and/or continue with one of several 2 + 2 bachelor degree options. The Medical Assisting Technology (MAT) Associate in Applied Science degree program at Ohio University–Lancaster is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (http://www.caahep.org/) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).  Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, 1361 Park Street, Clearwater, FL 33756, 727.210.2350. Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Students must complete a program application and a series of prerequisites prior to December 1 before enrolling in MAT 1700 and MAT 2010. These prerequisites include a completed health form with doctor certification that they are sufficiently healthy to perform clinical and practicum duties; up-to-date immunizations for MMR, Varicella, TB (within the last 10 years), Hepatitis B, and PPD (within one year of program entry date and two-step PD; current provider-level CPR (adult, child, infant) and first aid certifications; a signed Technical Standards statement on file; and any course prerequisites. Prior to practicum placement, students must pass background checks (FBI and BCI) and complete a practicum application prior to October 1. All documents must be submitted to the MAT program director.

Change of Program Policy

Students must apply to the program and complete a series of prerequisites before enrolling in MAT 1700 and MAT 2010. No requirements beyond University admission requirements.
 

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Upon graduation, graduates may sit for the CMA (AAMA) exam. Medical assistants perform a wide variety of clinical and administrative tasks in ambulatory health care settings, such as physician offices or urgent care clinics. Students may also pursue bachelor’s degrees in health administration, health communication, technical studies, or specialized studies.
 

Requirements

Technical Associate Degree Requirements


The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA upon graduation. A maximum of 15 credits earned through the experiential learning may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section. You also must meet Ohio University General Education requirements for associate degrees. You also must meet Ohio University General Education requirements for associate degrees. To earn a technical associate’s degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.

The medical assisting technology major requires a minimum of 63 hours.
