The Mathematics major—mathematical statistics track is intended to give the student rigorous training in the methods, mathematical foundations, and applications of statistics. “Mathematical Statistician” is a defined job title in the federal government that carries a higher average salary than the simple “Statistician” title. The B.S. degree prepares the candidate for a career as a statistician in a broad range of fields such as business, industrial, engineering, governmental, and educational.

When planning any program of study in mathematics, it is strongly recommended that you consult an advisor from the Department.

See the General Education Requirements listing in the “Graduation Requirements—Universitywide” section for Tier I quantitative skills requirements.

Universitywide Graduation Requirements

To complete this program, students must complete all Universitywide graduation requirements .

College-Level Requirements

Please see the College of Arts and Sciences  for college-level requirements.

Program Requirements

For a B.S. degree with a major in Mathematics—Mathematical Statistics Track, a student must complete a total of at least 53 hours.

These must include the following courses (44 hours) and at least 9 hours of applied statistics electives listed below.

Recommended Course Sequence

A well-qualified incoming student would follow the following course schedule:

Year 1:  MATH 263A, 263B, 263C, 211

Year 2:  MATH 263D, 308, 350

Year 3:  MATH 450A, 450B, 450C, 452

Year 4:  Applied Statistical Electives

Students who enter the program later or who are pursuing dual majors could take MATH 450A, 450B, 450C and 452 in their senior year and still complete the major.

Students planning to enter a graduate program in statistics or other mathematical sciences are encouraged to take as many of the following courses as time permits:
