DESCRIPTION OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION PH.D. PROGRAMS

I. STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY AND EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS

The purpose of the doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction is to cultivate educational leaders. Individuals within this
program focus on content and methods to improve educational practices and professional development through inquiry. The doctoral
program in Curriculum and Instruction promotes reflective educational inquiry in four ways:

  1. to create deep understanding of a selected specialization that provides context for inquiry into curriculum and instruction;
  2. to develop understanding of the cultural contexts of curriculum and instruction;
  3. to develop use of research tools appropriate to guide inquiry; and,
  4. to apply and disseminate the outcomes/products of inquiry.

II. COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAM
It is the responsibility of the student’s Curriculum and Instruction Doctoral Program Committee to set and examine the program
of studies reflecting the student’s individual needs and interests. Curriculum and Instruction is the theme of the program and is found
within the core, the specialization and the cognate. The Ph.D. program includes experiences organized in four categories. The
program includes a coherent course of study that provides flexibility while at the same time appropriately supports the development of
educational leaders. The four categories are: (A) The “core” including cultural context, teaching and learning, leadership, and
practicum and mentorship, (B) Research, (C) Specializations/Cognate, and (D) Dissertation.
