The Department of Mathematics at Ohio University is involved in wide-ranging activities, such as teaching introductory algebra and calculus, providing rigorous mathematics training for engineers, scientists, and math teachers, and conducting cutting-edge research in the mathematical sciences. The Department regards all levels of mathematical scholarship as interrelated and complementary to its role of educating undergraduate students in the mathematical sciences. Faculty members, several of whom have won teaching awards, take an active role in developing and maintaining the curriculum and teaching methods, integrating their expertise with teaching to give their students the best training possible.

The Department of Mathematics offers undergraduate degrees with majors in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Advanced Training, and Actuarial Sciences and a minor in Mathematics. In addition, the Department hosts an interdisciplinary degree with a major in Meteorology and a Mathematics major program through the Honors Tutorial College (HTC) for students with exceptionally strong records. The Department also has Masters and Ph.D. programs in Applied, Pure, and Computational Mathematics.

The Ohio University Department of Mathematics has several areas of strength, with expertise in abstract algebra, analysis, applied and computational mathematics, coding theory, differential equations and dynamics, discrete mathematics and applications, mathematical biology, mathematics education, statistics and stochastic mathematics, and topology and set theory.

Students in the Department begin their coursework with classes in the foundational areas of calculus and linear algebra. These are followed by intermediate-level core courses appropriate to the specific program, before taking more advanced elective courses according to their interests.

In addition to coursework in the mathematical sciences, students in the Department of Mathematics (with the exception of students in the HTC program) are expected to complete the General Education requirements set by Ohio University, as well as the requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Graduates from our programs pursue a variety of careers in business, industry, government, and education. Recent examples include graduates who have started jobs in computer programing and analysis, business consulting, national security, finance, and actuarial positions.  Some of our students choose to continue their studies in graduate and professional schools. Often students in our programs obtain dual degrees in areas where mathematics has significant applications and go to work in those fields.

The Department of Mathematics at Ohio University is committed to combining current expertise, an interesting curricula, and effective instruction to provide students with a high level of education in the mathematical sciences.
