THAR 2710 - Theater and Performance History I


This course explores performance, literature, and theatrical practices from pre-historical Africa, India, Asia, the Americas, and Europe, through the 17th century. We strive to better comprehend history through performance, and to develop the critical and aesthetic tools to appreciate and understand plays, rituals, design, and theories of theater in their original contexts, as well as in today’s world.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to ask complex questions of other cultures’ performance traditions and articulate answers to these questions that reflect multiple cultural perspectives.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of performances and their importance to members of other cultures in relation to history, values, politics, communication styles, personal identity, and beliefs and practices.
  • Students will be able to articulate insights about key plays, playwrights, genres, artistic movements, and performance practices, drawing on evidence from historical, social, and political contexts.
  • Students will be able to conduct and present research about the principles, terminology, and methods of historical theater styles, making connections between the past and the contemporary, including in their own artistic work.
  • Students will be able to analyze and interpret individual plays and performances, describing the creative processes involved in producing those works of art and connecting those processes to the final products.
