Program Overview

BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography

The BFA in dance performance and choreography offers exceptionally talented and motivated dance students an enhanced, individualized course of study. HTC Dance students work within the rigorous, daily studio coursework in performance and choreography offered by the School of Dance, supplemented by tutorials with faculty members, research and creative activity, internships, and other student-centered learning opportunities. The program facilitiates relationships between students and accomplished dance scholars, artists, and professionals.

Upon successful completion of the HTC BFA in Dance, students have acquired a sophisticated understanding of dance as an artistic and academic discipline, which encompasses dance performance, choreography, history, criticism, education, production, music/sound design for dance, kinesiology, movement analysis, and somatic practices. They are accomplished, versatile movers fluent in several aesthetic traditions, and they have a deep understanding of the creative process. They understand the historical and cultural contexts that have shaped dance in contemporary life. They possess a professional work ethic, which includes the ability to collaborate as well as the nuts-and-bolts skills needed to bring a performance to an audience. They have acquired both breadth and depth in their study of dance and related fields. They have had the opportunity to pursue special interests in depth, and completed independent research and creative activity projects under the close mentorship of dedicated faculty members.

BA in Honors Tutorial Dance

The BA in Honors Tutorial Dance Studies offers an individualized, liberal-arts based course of study for self-disciplined and highly motivated dance students.  It balances breadth and rigor with freedom for independent academic and creative achievement. While the BFA in HTC Dance Studies emphasizes performance and choreography, the BA enables students to pursue an individually designed course of study in dance history/theory, dance writing/criticism, interdisciplinary dance studies, dance ethnography, dance pedagogy, dance wellness and somatic study, or related fields. It is a four-year program in which students take a tutorial course each semester along with foreign language, supporting courses in related areas of study, and a full range of dance studies courses, from technique and composition to dance history.

The BA in HTC Dance Studies shares certain core requirements with the BFA in HTC Dance Studies: minimum 3.5 GPA, English composition requirements, Honors seminar, six tutorials, two thesis tutorials, successful submission of a thesis, first year foundational courses in dance, a studio dance technique series, a series in kinesiology and somatics, a series in dance history and world cultures, movement analysis, and pedagogy. This program requires fewer courses in dance technique and composition than the HTC BFA, and does not require participation in the senior project in performance and choreography. Instead, the program includes 40 credit hours outside dance in relevant areas of study to be determined by the academic advisor, as best fits the student’s academic interests.
