Program Mission:  The Master’s degree programs are designed for students seeking expertise in media fields beyond the undergraduate level.  Students typically tailor-make programs in various specialties (e.g., social media, media management).

Program Learning Objectives:

Graduates of the M.F.A. in Communication Media Arts program should:

  • Have produced a depth of multidisciplinary work in two or more digital media areas (e.g.: Animation and Games, Interactive Media, Photojournalism and Documentary, Publication Design, Data Visualization and Information Graphics).
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of those media areas and their role in the communication field.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of critical thinking and analysis, including historical and societal context of their chosen media.
  • Produce original media based upon original research in one or more content areas of the student’s choosing (Communication, Social Sciences, Fine Arts and/or Humanities, e.g.).
  • If entering teaching, have gained quality classroom leadership and organizational skills including delivery of content, leading classroom discussion, course planning, grading and feedback.

Program Overview:  Designed for mid-career professionals who already have professional expertise in at least one media area, MFA students select two additional areas of media in which to develop new expertise. Students also choose a cognate area outside of production.

This program is jointly administered by the School of Media Arts and Studies and the School of Visual communication, focusing on multidisciplinary, creative projects and project-based research. By exploring media production within content-specific areas, our students learn how to communicate as a leading-edge media professional.

Opportunities for Graduates:  The program expects students to return to the media industry with a new creative skill set and a richer portfolio, or to enter academia as a professor of media arts and visual communication.
