Certificate Mission: The mission of the certificate is to provide graduate students with a background in security and/or peace studies.

Delivery Mode: Athens Campus

Certificate Overview: War and Peace Studies Graduate Certificate allows students to explore the field of peace and security studies from an interdisciplinary perspective. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security, new emphases on improved intelligence analysis and risk assessments, border control, sophisticated cyber threats, immigration, heightened proliferation, increased attention and hiring in the areas of counterterrorism and counterinsurgency, as well as reconstruction and development in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan, culminate in demand for students well-trained in war and peace studies.

The program addresses the increased need for employees in this field, especially in the post 9-11 era. The job market is competitive and every career demands a substantive understanding of global dynamics today. In our program, we introduce our students to the fields of peace and security studies through one-on-one advising and relevant coursework.  The students also participate in the myriad events and workshops related to dynamics of conflict and cooperation, network with experts and activists, work closely with our faculty and present their research in national conferences. 

Opportunities upon Completion:  War and Peace Studies certificate helps students land jobs in the U.S. Department of State (in both Washington, D.C. and at U.S. embassies abroad), congressional offices, U.S. Military and non-governmental organizations including advocacy networks and think-tanks.  The certificate also expands the opportunities in communications, journalism, development and human rights related careers.

Graduation Requirements: Students should complete 16 credit hours by taking designated courses (4 credit hours of Core War and Peace Courses, 12 credit hours of War and Peace Electives as shown in the course catalogue).  There is no language or study abroad requirement for the certificate.

Admission Requirements: The certificate is open to students from any department or school. The certificate cannot be added without entry to into a degree program.
