Degree Title: Master of Science in Physiology of Exercise

Program Name and Numbers: Physiology of Exercise - MS8111, MS8147

Department/Unit: School of Applied Health Sciences and Wellness

Delivery Mode: Athens Campus

Program Mission: The mission of the Physiology of Exercise Master’s Program is to provide students the opportunity to expand on their foundation in science and gain experience in research and hands-on skills.

Program Learning Objectives: Upon completion of their Master of Science degree in the Physiology of Exercise the student will be able to:

  • discuss the role of the energy systems and contributions of required substrates in the performance of physical activities;
  • describe the normal cardiopulmonary, metabolic, musculoskeletal, endocrine and neurological responses to an exercise bout;
  • identify the physiological principles underlying chronic training adaptations and how these responses may differ between different ages, gender, ethnicity and health or physiological status;
  • demonstrate their knowledge of risk factors and the pathophysiology of the major chronic diseases;
  • apply their knowledge of physiology, exercise physiology and nutritional concepts to design exercise programs, which take into account participants’ needs and considers their age, gender, ethnicity and health of physiological status;
  • evaluate current research and apply this knowledge to exercise and/or physiological situations;
  • propose appropriate research designs to develop and test a research hypothesis.

Program Overview:  The Physiology of Exercise graduate program provides students with the specialized skills needed to work in either a clinical, academic or research environment.  Students can choose between two programs: research or clinical.

The Research program is a two-year program that requires completing a master’s thesis.  This track prepares students to work in an academic or research environment, encouraging students to become actively involved with faculty research and conducting their own research under the mentorship of faculty.

The Clinical program is designed to prepare students to work as researchers in the field, or as preventative and rehabilitative specialists (preparing students to seek certification by the American College of Sports Medicine).  This program includes hands-on experiences throughout the entire four-semester program (which typically starts and ends in the Summer).

Graduation Requirements: The Physiology of Exercise-Research program [MS8111] typically is completed in 2 years and requires a minimum of 33 credit hours and successful completion of a thesis.  In general, the Physiology of Exercise-Clinical program [MS8147] is completed in four-semesters (which typically begins and ends in the summer), requires successful completion of a comprehensive exam, an internship, and 34 credit hours.

Admission Requirements: selected science and application lectures and lab; competitive GPA ≥3.0/4.0; satisfactory GRE ≥50th percentile for verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing; statement of purpose; resume or curriculum vita; and three (3) letters of reference (at least two (2) from academic faculty members).
