Delivery Mode: ME6272 Athens Campus, Regional Campuses (Chillicothe, Southern, Lancaster/Pickerington). Through a balanced approach of on-line and in-class instruction, all campus models include a blended format meeting face to face once each month and twice weekly during the academic year and twice weekly for 5-8 weeks each summer while the remainder of the content is covered in an online format. The program offers course work and internships required for obtaining a master’s degree in educational administration and/or an Ohio principal’s license. Students may choose to pursue only the license or only the master’s degree or they can pursue both the degree and license.

Program Mission: To provide an opportunity for educators and educational leaders to build and enhance capacities in educational administration, policy analysis, and research for service in local, regional, state, national, and international arenas. The program is committed to preparing students to be agents of change in education and related fields such as government agencies, foundations, and private non-profit organizations.

Program Learning Objectives: Emphasizing the knowledge, skills, and practices of responsive leadership, the Educational Administration Program fosters a vision of humane, engaging, inviting schools and educational settings; including:

  • Understanding of leadership theory and models of practice
  • Understanding of organizational behavior and management principles
  • Commitment to social justice and democratic principles to promote academic excellence, equity and a more knowledgeable citizenry
  • Hands-on experience in an appropriate internship setting
  • Understanding of effective change theory and adult learning principles
  • Commitment to, and practice in, research and evidence based practice and application

Program Overview: The Master’s Degree program in Educational Administration involves a minimum of 34 semester hours encompassing the study of the foundations of educational leadership, the nature of school organizations, human relations in educational organizations, and research methods and applications. Additional coursework, specialized study and field experiences are included to prepare the students for varied administrative roles; including: Principal and Teacher Leader.

Concentrations: Students wanting to complete the General Master’s Degree in Educational Administration only should be prepared to identify 12 semester hours of coursework in a related field of study.

Opportunities for Graduates: Program graduates typically assume positions as school principals, school superintendents, and other K-12 educational leaders, or they continue to serve as teachers in K-12 settings.  In addition, graduates who work in the public or private sector fill other leadership and/or administrative roles in those organizations. Other graduates enter doctoral programs in leadership and related fields.

Graduation Requirements: 34 semester hours are required for the basic master’s degree with additional coursework required for principal licensure. No thesis is required. If undergraduate grade averages are met, no entrance exam is required.

No Comprehensive Exam is required.

The Master’s program can be completed in four semesters if going full time.

Principal Licensure requires a total of 52 semester hours  in which a master’s degree in educational administration of 34 hours is embedded.

Admission Requirements:

  1. A 2.9 GPA in the undergraduate coursework of a bachelor’s degree, a 3.25 GPA in the last 90 hours of a bachelor’s degree or a 3.5 GPA in the coursework comprising a master’s degree.
  2. Undergraduate coursework taken after the obtainment of a bachelor’s degree cannot be included in the calculations.
  3. An applicant whose GPA is below the levels stated above, can be considered by taking and reporting the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
  4. A 3-5 page autobiography including a listing of future goals.
