Program Overview

Ohio University-Lancaster offers a two-year program in Deaf studies and interpreting leading to an Associate in Applied Science. This degree provides educational and experiential coursework to prepare students for entry-level interpreting positions.  Upon successful completion of the program, students may apply for a license from the Ohio Department of Education to be a sign language interpreter in kindergarten through 12th grade public school settings.  Other career opportunities include working in a business, agency, or as a freelance interpreter.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Students can find entry-level interpreting positions in educational settings, interpreting agencies, or set-up a small business to contract interpreting services. Students may be interested in furthering his/her education with a bachelors degree in interpreting or by taking workshops in legal, medical, or mental health interpreting.
 

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the deaf studies and interpreting major, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • Language proficiency in American Sign Language, written, spoken, and signed English
  • Understanding of the multiplicity within the Deaf community including history, cultural norms and values, communication practices and community resources.
  • At least entry level competency in different modes of interpreting and transliterating (simultaneous and consecutive) and different target language forms (e.g., ASL, spoken or signed English, tactical language) in order to transfer a message from the source language into the target language.
  • Applied knowledge of ethical and culturally competent decision making, professional standards, the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and multicultural sensitivity as they relate to the work of interpreters in various contexts.
  • The ability to critically assess their own work and use creative problem-solving to continually develop themselves.
  • The attitudes and skills expected of professionals including the ability to apply critical and creative thinking skills as well as participation in professional organizations.

Technical Associate Degree Requirements


The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA in both the major area of study and all course work attempted at Ohio University. A maximum of 15 credits earned through the experiential learning may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements – Universitywide  section. You also must meet Ohio University General Education requirements for associate degrees. (See Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section)

To earn a technical associate’s degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.

The Deaf studies and interpreting major requires a minimum of 61 hours.
