Secondary Instrument

If piano is the principal instrument, the secondary instrumental requirement may be satisfied by one of the following methods:

1. By taking applied lessons on an instrument other than piano for 6 quarters (1 hour per quarter).
2. By taking a total of 3 quarters (2 hours per quarter) of either MUS 261, String Methods and Materials or MUS 263, Wind and Percussion Methods and Materials, or a combination of both.
3. Demonstration of Keyboard Skills Proficiency (KSP) is required. (See School of Music Handbook).

If the principal instrument is other than piano:

1. The student must take a minimum of two years of Class Piano (MUS 141-243) or 6 quarters of MUS 341 (eligibility to be determined by the keyboard division).
2. If a student in the class piano sequence does not pass the Keyboard Skills Proficiency (KSP) exam at the close of the sophomore year, then the student must take up to 3 additional quarters of class piano (MUS 359, 360, and 361) until the KSP is completed.

Select one course from the following:

• COMS 101 - Fundamentals of Human Communication Credit Hours: 4
• COMS 103 - Fundamentals of Public Speaking Credit Hours: 4

Music Literature Elective

Complete 9 credit hours from the following:

• MUS 421A - Literature of Choral Music Credit Hours: 3
• MUS 421B - Literature of Piano Music Credit Hours: 3
• MUS 421C - Literature of Chamber Music Credit Hours: 3
• MUS 421D - Literature of Orchestral Music Credit Hours: 3
• MUS 421E - Literature of Organ Music Credit Hours: 3
• MUS 421F - Literature of Opera Credit Hours: 3
• MUS 421G - Literature of Band Music Credit Hours: 3
