Dance Major (B.A.)

The B.A. degree is a program of dance studies that develops dance skills necessary to performance and facility in the application of principles that reflect an intellectual grasp of the art. It presents a strong potential for interdisciplinary studies in the areas of biological, physical, and social sciences, humanities and world cultures, and is for individuals who seek a broad program of general education in the undergraduate years.

Universitywide Graduation Requirements


To complete this program, students must complete all Universitywide graduation requirements.

Arts and Sciences Requirements for Fine Arts


200-Level Courses


Complete 90 hours of Arts and Sciences coursework at or above the 200 level.

Foreign Language Requirement


Complete the equivalent of two years of college-level foreign language.

Humanities


Complete 18 hours of Arts and Sciences humanities coursework from two or more areas, with at least eight hours in one area.

Social Sciences


Complete 18 hours of Arts and Sciences social sciences coursework from two or more areas, with at least eight hours in one area.

Natural Sciences


Complete 18 hours of Arts and Sciences natural sciences coursework from two or more areas, with at least eight hours in one area.

Degree Requirements


The B.A. in Dance requires a minimum of 192 credit hours, with 72 required credit hours in dance. General Education/Tier requirements are 45-50 credits. 65-70 credits are required for area distribution requirements. Area distribution requirements courses are determined and chosen in conference with your individual academic advisor. Area distribution requirements may include courses outside the College of Fine Arts or within the College of Fine Arts. Area distribution requirements may also include courses required for a second major. Proficiency in a foreign language is required for the B.A.

Freshman


  • General Education/Tier I, II requirements: 13-15
  • Foreign Lanugauage Credit Hours: 8-12
  • Select additional area distribution requirements to fulfill a total credit hour requirement of 16 per term.

Sophomore


  • General Education/Tier IIrequirements: 12-15
  • Foreign Lanugauage Credit Hours: 12
  • Select additional area distribution requirements to fulfill a total credit hour requirement of 16 per term.

At the junior and senior levels, students should select performance and dance electives. Courses must be chosen with consultation and approval from the student’s advisor.

Optional dance studio techniques courses


At the junior and senior levels, students may select dance studio techniques courses at the 200 level or above. Courses must be chosen with consultation and approval from the student’s advisor.

Senior


  • General Education/Tier III or Senior Capstone Credit Hours: 4-5
  • Select additional area distribution requirements to fulfill a total credit hour requirement of 16 per term

At the junior and senior levels, students may select dance studio techniques courses at the 200 level or above. Courses must be chosen with consultation and approval from the student’s advisor.

Performance and dance electives: 5-12
