Program Overview

The Latin American Studies certificate — open to undergraduate students from any major — promotes a greater understanding of Latin America through academic coursework and language acquisition. The faculty’s research and experience in the region create an intellectual atmosphere where students are challenged to understand Latin America within a context of regional and global change.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

The Latin American Studies undergraduate certificate equips students with specialized knowledge in regional issues and language proficiency, enhancing their primary degree and making them more competitive for careers in academia, international organizations, and global business. This additional credential prepares students to work effectively in roles that require expertise in Latin American cultures and languages, such as diplomatic service, international development agencies, and multicultural education programs.

The Latin American studies certificate program requires a minimum of 15 credit hours and all of the requirements below.

Language Requirement

Complete one year (two semesters) in Spanish or Portuguese language. Students who have studied the language prior to enrollment at Ohio University must continue their study of the same or another regional language while at Ohio University.
