Program Overview

The German minor allows students to enrich their major program with advanced language skills and intercultural understanding. Minors complete GER 2120  and elect four courses at the 3000 or 4000 level in literature, culture, linguistics, film and/or art, which offer rich content and sharpen analytic and critical thinking skills. Minors must earn a grade of C (2.0) or better. Frequent writing assignments and speaking activities reinforce clarity of thought and expression, and small classes offer individual attention and encourage dialog, collaboration, and curiosity about others. While not required, many minors participate in a study abroad program to one of the German-speaking countries.

Students who minor in German often major in fields such as journalism, political science, education, sociology, or business. They typically find jobs in areas like print or broadcast media, government, teaching, social services, or industry, and their language proficiency and cultural competence make them stand out among other job applications.
