Program Overview

The European studies certificate — open to students from any major — prepares students to understand the changing nature of European economies, culture and politics. Europe maintains vital cultural and political influence on a global scale. This certificate provides undergraduates with a broad understanding of Europe. The curriculum involves courses from many disciplines and encourages students to study abroad. The interdisciplinary coursework and language skills of the European Studies Certificate are applicable to a wide variety of professions.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

The European Studies undergraduate certificate prepares students for careers that require a nuanced understanding of Europe’s political, cultural, and economic landscapes. Graduates pursue opportunities in international diplomacy, transatlantic trade and business, public policy, and global development. The certificate supports careers in international law, cultural and heritage preservation, nonprofit and NGO work, and education, as well as roles in journalism and media that focus on European affairs. Students also gain regional expertise that is valuable for graduate study, foreign service, and positions within government agencies and multinational organizations operating in or with Europe.

Language Requirement


Complete one year (two semesters) in one European language. Students who have studied the language prior to enrollment at Ohio University must continue their study of the same or another regional language while at Ohio University. Students must enroll in an appropriate level of on-campus language coursework.
