EDTE 2110 - Youth Culture, Education, & Society


This course uses a critical analysis of hip-hop and youth culture aesthetics as a lens for understanding teaching in a culturally diverse society. It explores how educators can use hip-hop and youth culture to investigate social justice themes that students face daily and particularly within schools. Course content also focuses on the social identities of youth (e.g., age, ability, race, class, gender, and sexuality) and the implications of intersectionality on their experiences in and outside of school.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate differences and similarities between their own culture and youth culture.
  • Students will be able to illustrate, in general, how history, values, policies, and pedagogical approaches influence K-12 youth experiences in the educational system.
  • Students will be able to use strategies and perspectives from hip-hop and youth culture to interpret how a range of cultural groups experience schooling and identify educational strategies that ensure that students perform well.
  • Students will be able to describe cultural differences and explain how to use their understanding of cultural differences to communicate with families.
  • Students will be able to ask complex questions about the educational experiences of K-12 youth and articulate answers that reflect a range of perspectives.
  • Students will be able to explain how to initiate and develop connections with K-12 youth of other cultures using principles from Youth Culture Pedagogy.
  • Students will be able to identify how their own ethical core beliefs shape ethical conduct with respect to their own views of youth culture, teaching, philosophy, and educational practices.
  • Students will be able to describe ethical standards in education through a lens of youth culture.
  • Students will be able to recognize and evaluate how youth culture intersects with various ethical issues and how they both intersect in the field of education.
  • Students will be able to apply ethical standards and theories for ethical decision-making in a K-12 setting.
  • Students will be able to evaluate alternative ethical perspectives within youth culture in the field of education.
