HIST 3465 - History of US China Relations


This course examines the relationship between the United States and China by tracing its history from the eighteenth century to the present. An exploration of the political, diplomatic, cultural, and economic history of the complex and consequential interactions between the two countries is balanced with a consideration of the impact of US-China ties on the lives of ordinary individuals.

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe major political, economic, social, intellectual, and cultural aspects of the US-China relationship.
  • Students will be able to identify specific individuals and events that illustrate major aspects of the US-China relationship.
  • Students will be able to describe how the US-China relationship has changed over time.
  • Students will be able to construct historical arguments based on primary source materials.
  • Students will be able to apply their knowledge of the history of US-China relations to assess the contemporary US-China relationship.
