Overview of political, economic, and social issues that shape the external relations of African nations, and of non-state and international participants in these relations.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Analyze and compare the experiences of African states in the international sphere, given their diverse colonial histories, varying levels of economic development, and different levels of state capacity.
  • Describe and analyze the historical and contemporary engagements of non-African states (the US, China, former colonial powers) in African politics.
  • Describe and explain the major patterns and trends that have characterized the international relations of African states since independence.
  • Use theories from international relations and comparative politics to evaluate and explain the roles of non-state actors and international organizations (including continental and regional bodies) in African international relations.
