ML 3271 - Technology in Translation
Students acquire an understanding of the concepts involving technology in translation, such as machine translation, globalization, internationalization, localization, and audiovisual translation. They analyze the roles of language professionals in this growing industry and the qualities of a good translator, in order to create an effective CV and cover letter to market themselves. Class time is devoted to discussions, group work and hands-on project-based tasks applying professional software for translators. This includes translations of technical, legal and medical texts. Students have the possibility of becoming certified in a Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tool at no cost through our academic program partnership.

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to identify and apply concepts involving Technology in Translation and the roles of language professionals in this growing industry.
- Students will be able to utilize internet resources for translators when conducting research.
- Students will be able to apply the main functions of Translation Memory Tools (part of CAT) to the translation of different documents and formats to improve consistency, translation Quality Assurance and productivity.
- Students will be able to employ professional and personal skills needed in the translation profession.
- Students will be able to create and evaluate an effective CV and cover letter for a translation job.
- Students will be able to describe and discuss the advantages/disadvantages and overall impact of the widespread use of CAT tools on the translation industry.
