REC 3400 - Environmental Interpretation


The art of interpretation is a process of communication, designed to produce both an emotional and intellectual bond between an audience and the cultural and/or natural resources that are the subject of interpretation. Will help students develop an understanding of the principles and techniques necessary for effective interpretation, with a specific focus on interpreting cultural and natural resources in parks and protected areas. Students will design and construct interpretive materials and address how these materials may serve as an important tool in parks and protected areas management.

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate ways in which to evaluate whether an agency has met the management goals of an interpretive program.
  • Design and create a professional exhibit, poster, or form of media that effectively communicates information about a specific area or natural resource issue.
  • Develop and deliver a substantive interpretation presentation designed to establish both an intellectual and emotional bond between the audience and the object of interpretation using specific interpretation techniques.
  • Identify communication styles that effectively address various resource management issues.
  • Successfully articulate the principles of interpretation and apply this knowledge in a variety of interpretive settings.
