EDTE 3710 - Instructional Adaptations for Early Childhood Learners with Exceptionalities and Diverse Needs


Course combines with clinical/field experience to develop skills needed by early childhood educators to work with families and young children with special needs in early childhood programs. Content includes universal design of curricula and assessments, curriculum modifications, instructional and management adaptations, Response to Intervention (RTI), the development and use of positive behavior supports, students assessment and progress monitoring, effective collaboration strategies, accessing related and support services, and skills required for instructing/managing an inclusive classroom.

Requisites: Admission to Advanced Standing and 2.75 GPA
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

  • Demonstrate knowledge of co-planning and co-teaching methods to strengthen content acquisition of individuals.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of consultation and collaboration methods to work with families, agencies, and early childhood programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of issues, assurances, and due process rights related to assessment, eligibility, and placement of young children within a continuum of services.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the educational and social implications of characteristics of various exceptionalities.
  • Evaluate and modify instructional practices in response to progress monitoring and ongoing assessment data.
  • Implement research-supported methods for academic and nonacademic instruction of young children with exceptional and diverse learning needs and their families.
  • Organize, develop, and sustain learning environments that support universally designed, developmentally appropriate intra-cultural and intercultural experiences.
  • Recognize differing ways of learning, including those from culturally diverse backgrounds/demonstrate skill in implementing strategies and identifying related levels of support.
  • Use reflection on one’s practice to improve instruction and guide professional growth.
  • Utilize strategies to support and enhance communication and early literacy skills of individuals with exceptional & diverse learning needs.
