HIST 2530 - Life, Love, and Death in the Medieval World This course explores life in medieval Europe through the interpretation of contemporary sources, including saints’ lives, chronicles written by conquerors and the conquered, first-hand murder accounts, and how-to guides composed for lovers, monks, knights, and architects. Lectures will also introduce evidence from archaeology and the visual arts to complement the literary record. This is a thematic course rather than a chronological survey. General topics include The World Around Them, Rules of Love, Culture of Violence, and Visions of the End.
