INST 1010 - Introduction to International Studies and Diplomacy


This course provides an interdisciplinary exploration of global challenges, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and international cooperation. Through a place-based and context-driven approach, students examine the key political, economic, and social forces that shape the contemporary global order. The course centers on the role of the United Nations in addressing humanity’s most urgent challenges. Students develop foundational skills in public speaking and persuasive communication as they engage with complex global issues, learning to propose innovative solutions and participate actively in the global community.

  • Students will be able to provide credible, relevant, and convincing information (e.g., explanations, analogies, quotations, statistics, examples, contexts) that supports the principal ideas of a presentation or establishes the presenter’s credibility.
  • Students will be able to articulate a precise, compelling, and memorable purpose or main point of a presentation and group and sequence ideas and supporting material cohesively to accomplish their goals.
  • Students will be able to use unbiased vocabulary, terminology, and sentence structure appropriate to the topic and audience, as well as posture, gestures, eye contact, and voice to enhance presentation effectiveness.
  • Students will be able to identify their own ethical core beliefs, formulate ethical perspectives, theories, and concepts, and evaluate alternative ethical viewpoints in decision-making situations.
  • Students will be able to apply ethical perspectives, theories, or concepts to global and multicultural decision-making contexts.
