SW 3870 - Research Methods in Social Work Social work research course that covers introductory research concepts, program evaluation, evaluation of practice with clients and groups, quantitative and qualitative research, ethical issues, and the writing of research reports.
Requisites: (PSY 2110 or PSY 1110) and SW major and (Jr or Sr) Credit Hours: 3 OHIO BRICKS: Bridge: Learning and Doing Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to identify the ethical responsibilities and dilemmas faced by social work researchers.
- Students willl be able to explain the basic research terms and concepts to engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the basic research process from developing a statement of the problem through writing the final report.
- Students will be able to develop research questions and hypotheses related to social problems and practice settings.
- Students will be able to explain the selective use of different research designs to answer varied research questions.
- Students will be able to describe how research designs may be developed to control for or minimize threats to internal and external validity.
- Students will be be able to identify the difference between quantitative and qualitative approaches to research and the strengths and weaknesses of each.
- Students will be able to critically analyze published research articles to apply empirically tested evidence to practice effectiveness with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
