LING 4941 - Directed Research in Linguistics Working under the direction of a faculty member, students will undertake their own research and present the results of their research to their peers.
Requisites: Permission required Credit Hours: 1 - 3 OHIO BRICKS: Bridge: Learning and Doing Repeat/Retake Information: May be repeated for a maximum of 6.0 hours. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 research Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to formulate clear and answerable research questions.
- Students will be able to use a range of techniques for collecting data.
- Students will be able to design and implement an instrument to quantify their data.
- Students will be able to use software such as Qualtrics and NVivo.
- Students will be able to apply a basic understanding of descriptive statistics.
- Students will be able to use critical thinking to interpret their data in terms of findings and implications.
- Students will be able to communicate about their research experience using realia, writing, and oral and audio-visual presentation modes.
- Students will be able to connect their original research experience to their academic knowledge gained in Linguistics.
- Students will be able to make connections between perspectives in their original linguistics research experience with other disciplinary perspectives they have encountered.
- Students will be able to transfer the skills, abilities, theories, or methodologies acquired in different situations to effectively carry out their linguistic research.
- Students will be able to reflect upon their research experience, assess their performance, and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
