Certificate Overview

The Executive Management for Healthcare Professionals certificate provides executives with management skills related to leading teams, departments, and other aspects of healthcare organizations. For instance, students will gain knowledge, skills, and abilities related to managing teams; analyzing data for decision making; and managing quality improvement projects. An additional elective course provides specialized knowledge related to finance, analytics, business intelligence, or business venturing. A professional who completes this graduate certificate will be a more effective manager in healthcare organizations.

This graduate certificate serves to sharpen the managerial skills of working professionals and graduate students looking to advance their healthcare careers. This certificate is especially valuable for clinical professionals looking to advance their managerial acumen.  Healthcare professionals are under increasing pressures to run their organizations like businesses. They are demanded to decrease costs while also maintaining or increasing quality of care. Most clinical training, such as medical school or nursing school has not historically provided these professionals with the business skills needed.  The Executive Management for Healthcare Professionals certificate strives to provide relevant, practical management skills to healthcare professionals. Expected time to completion is 2-3 semesters.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  1. Describe strategies for managing teams and team dynamics
  2. Organize and analyze data for decision making
  3. Describe strategies for managing quality improvement projects using Lean Six Sigma methods
  4. Identify the challenges of managing people and processes in healthcare environments

Opportunities upon Completion

After the completion of the Executive Management for Heathcare Professionals graduate certificate, students will be able to apply techniques for data analysis and process improvement, understanding the complexity of managing other people as well as teams.  Students can advance their career opportunities by pursuing higher-level managerial positions that build on their existing clinical expertise.  Some examples may be nurse managers, hospitial directors, physician-leaders, etc.

Admission Requirements

  • Online application with $35 fee
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited university, GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Official transcript(s)
  • Current resume
  • Personal statement for students whose undergraduate GPA is less than 3.0.
  • No GRE or GMAT scores required

International applicants must also submit:

  • TOEFL iBT score of 150 or IELTS of 7.5
  • General academic credentials evaluation (ECE or WES report)

College of Business Graduate Academic Credit Transfer Policy

Students may request transfer of credit from an accredited university within the limits of the Ohio University Graduate Catalog. Graduate credits from AACSB accredited business school or college may be applied toward a College of Business graduate program under the following conditions:

  1. A maximum of six credit hours toward a graduate degree program may be applied.
  2. A maximum of three credit hours toward a graduate certificate may be applied.
  3. Approval of transfer credit is granted by the Department Chair of the academic discipline in which credit is being requested. Course credit must be:
  4. Earned through an AACSB-accredited business school,
  5. Designated as graduate credit at the institution where taken,
  6. Letter graded B or better,
  7. Earned within the pasts five years,
  8. Applicable toward a graduate degree at the institution where taken, and
  9. Earned in courses taught by members of that institution’s graduate faculty.

Students must provide the following information to the Graduate College during the admissions process for graduate course credits to be evaluated for transfer credit:

  1. Official Transcript
  2. Syllabus from course(s) to be evaluated for transfer credit, from the term the course was completed
  3. COB Graduate Transfer Credit Form

International Students

This certificate does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and a I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.

Completion Requirements

Admitted students will need to earn a C or better in all of the certificate courses. And, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be awarded the certificate.
