The program is one calendar year in length, consisting of three academic semesters delivered in-person.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate the ability to self-assess and implement feedback to promote personal and professional growth.
  2. develop professional and collaborative relationships with members of the pediatric and adolescent healthcare team.
  3. exhibit citizenship and professional engagement within the local or professional community.
  4. function as a patient advocate through interprofessional collaboration and consideration of patient and family values.
  5. apply critically appraised research to improve pediatric and adolescent patient outcomes.
  6. provide quality health care efficiently and consistently.
  7. use patient and clinical outcomes to develop a quality improvement plan.

Opportunities upon Completion

The Athletic Training Residency (CTATRG) in Dublin offers an advanced practice adolescent residency for athletic trainers. Considering nearly 25% of athletic trainers work with a patient population under the age of 19 (https://members.nata.org/members1/salarysurvey2016/results.cfm), a program offering advanced course work and mentored clinical practice focused upon adolescent sports medicine issues provides newly credentialed athletic trainers the opportunity to enter their careers with the necessary training and experience to step into leadership roles providing athlete-related health care in primary and secondary schools as well as recreational and youth sport leagues. Course work and clinical experiences will address six core competences: (1) patient-centered care, (2) interdisciplinary collaboration, (3) evidence-based practice, (4) quality improvement, (5) use of healthcare informatics, and (6) professionalism.

Certificate Relationship to Parent Degree Program

The parent program of the stackable certificate, Athletic Training Residency, is the Clinical Doctorate in Athletic Training  (DAT) degree. Neither enrollment in nor completion of the DAT degree is required to complete the Athletic Training Residency Certificate, but completing the certificate in Athletic Training Residency does fulfill 6 of 15 courses towards the DAT.

To be admitted to the Doctorate in Athletic Training (DAT), a candidate must have a master’s degree and be a graduate of a CAATE-accredited athletic training program.  Those residents who elect to apply the 17 credit hours earned as required by the certificate (CTATRG) would have up to six calendar years (18 semesters) to complete the remaining 25 credit hours for completion of the DAT.

Culminating Experience

Athletic training residents will complete a collaborative capstone project that is applicable to their work settings. The project will be based upon patient and/or clinician outcomes collected during clinical practice.
