Program Overview

The Ph.D. program in Educational Research and Evaluation (EDRE) is intended to prepare graduate students both for faculty positions and for leadership roles in research organizations.

The EDRE program offer students an interdisciplinary understanding and knowledge base about educational research and evaluation. Students are encouraged to develop a program of study of their specific area of concentration yet have the flexibility necessary to develop programs that meet their individual career goals and interests; besides required courses, students are encouraged to include quantitative, qualitative and mixed research methodologies in their programs. Students are required to identify four core areas of specializations for their programs, which will serve as areas for comprehensive examination and areas of research, teaching and service in their future careers.

If a student is enrolled full time this degree can be completed in 3-5 years.

Opportunities for Graduates

Upon completion of the EDRE Ph.D., graduates can successfully conduct research, construct measurement instruments, design research protocols, analyze research findings, contribute to theory development in the field, and teach course in measurements, statistics, research design and qualitative methodology.

Admission Requirements

All applications are reviewed holistically. The department requires

GRE scores, with a minimum quantitative/verbal combined score of 300 recommended,
official transcripts from all institutions attended,
three written letters of recommendation,
an autobiography and statement of professional goals, and
a resume or curriculum vitae. A minimum GPA of 3.4 is recommended. International applicants must also provide proof of financial responsibility and proof of English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL scores).

Note: Students who transfer from other institutions of higher learning can include up to ten (10) hours of transfer credit toward the completion of the degree.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

Complete a minimum of 70 credit hours (exclusive of master’s degree hours) as follows:

Course Requirements

The minimum course requirement of 60 credit hours allows students maximum flexibility to develop programs that meet their individual needs and interests. Students identify four core areas for their Programs of Study (POS), which typically include one or two areas of specialization that comprise courses from across the university.

Culminating Experience

Students will complete and successfully defend a dissertation.
