Program Overview

The Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) is designed for teachers and educators who have already earned a bachelor’s degree and have licensure in any content area at any age/grade-band level. Teachers entering the C&I Master’s program at Ohio University are seeking opportunities to advance their knowledge, skills, and dispositions in instruction, curriculum design and evaluation. Coursework and clinical experiences are centered around teachers’ own classrooms or non-traditional educational settings and focus on innovations in student learning, curriculum development, pedagogy, assessment, mentoring, portfolio development and community involvement culminating in a Master’s Research Project that is completed within the teacher’s own classroom, school, educational setting, or community. If started in the Summer, teachers finish the following summer. Please note: While working on the M.Ed. in C&I, educators must be actively employed in an educational setting during the Fall & Spring semesters to complete their clinical classes. This program does not lead to an initial or additional teaching licensure. It is offered in an online format only, with no required face-to-face class meetings, conferences, or orientations.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • be able to apply current curriculum theory and principles to analyze, evaluate and design innovative education curricula
  • be able to sit for NBPTS component 1 exam and have at least one portfolio ready for submission.
  • be able to research and apply best practices associated with their major field of study in their classroom instruction that shows they know the subject they teach and how best to teach those subjects.
  • be able to implement educational instruction that is culturally responsive to ensure just, fair, and equitable treatment for all students showing their commitment to managing and monitoring their students and their students’ learning.
  • be able to design and conduct ethical action research in their educational settings in systematic ways that promotes reflective teaching practice in order to assist their students to achieve at their highest potential via critical reflection as an on-going process.
  • be able to write and present their action research findings in order to ensure on-going revision and evaluation to their classroom and school curricula as active members of the larger learning communities.

  • Curriculum Vita/Resume
  • Bachelor’s degree with 3.0 or higher GPA or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score of 290 (verbal and quantitative combined).
  • Licensure/Certificate and gainfully employed in an educational setting during the Fall and Spring semester.

International Students

This program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

A minimum of 30 credit hours is required. Credits earned in an Endorsement completed at Ohio University will contribute, by course substitution, to minimum credits required for the degree.

Culminating Experience

Students must complete a capstone master’s research project. This degree does not require a thesis or comprehensive exam.
