Program Overview
The College of Health Sciences and Professions and the College of Arts and Sciences jointly sponsor the Experimental Study of Language Certificate program. The Certificate program is an interdisciplinary complement to any undergraduate baccalaureate degree program. The scientific study of language is spread across multiple disciplines and has been growing rapidly. This program is designed for students who have an interest in language and to enhance the preparation for students who plan to enter graduate study in an area of language investigation that has an experimental focus. Such areas include but are not restricted to communication sciences and disorders; experimental and applied phonetics; psycholinguistics; computational linguistics; and instructional design in language teaching. These programs are typically doctoral programs, not master’s programs. They recruit from undergraduate programs that provide strong research backgrounds. The certificate is interdisciplinary, requiring students to take coursework from outside their academic majors and offering them research opportunities in the form of individual, guided research experiences in faculty research labs. The certificate also includes core coursework that provides content in the areas of linguistics, psycholinguistics, statistics, and research methods.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program:
- Students will be able to explain the interdisciplinary nature of the study of language research in the context of their research experience(s).
- Students will be able to use methods of logical analysis in analyzing language data.
- Students will be able to interpret research results in the context and with an understanding of the nature of language.
- Students will be able to explain their research to a broad audience.

Freshman Admission
Admission to the certificate program is competitive. Students with a GPA of at least 3.0 may apply for admission no later than the end of sophomore year (by the last day of class in the spring semester of sophomore year). If interested in the certificate, please contact:
