Program Overview

Ohio University offers an accredited, two-year associates degree program in nursing (ADN), which combines coursework and clinical experiences in contemporary health care environments. Following successful completion of the associate of applied science degree, the student will be eligible to submit an application to the board of nursing and be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses (RN).  Students in the second year of the Ohio University associate degree in nursing program may be eligible for dual enrollment in the Ohio University online RN to BSN program. 

Ohio University also offers an LPN to RN track for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) desiring to obtain an associate degree in nursing.  Upon completion of the ADN students will become eligible to submit an application to the applicable board of nursing and be eligible to take the NCLEX for Registered Nurses (RN).

Graduates with an associate degree in nursing work in a variety of settings. Some of these include hospital-based medical centers, clinics, long-term nursing facilities, and private practice. 

The ADN program and the LPN to RN track are offered at Chillicothe, Southern, and Zanesville.  Please contact your campus office if you have questions (please see contact information above).

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program:

  • Students will be able to apply knowledge and evidence-based practice to provide a safe and effective care environment for their patients.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate autonomy in assessing and analyzing physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural patient data for a variety of patient populations across the lifespan.
  • Students will be able to utilize the nursing process while providing care for a variety of patient populations across the lifespan.
  • Students will be able to employ effective communication skills when interacting with patients, families, members of the community, and members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Students will be able to execute nursing care in a professional manner, adhering to ethical and legal frameworks.

Admissions Information

First-Year Admission

Students must meet University admission requirements and admission to associate degree nursing program. Admission to the associate degree nursing program is selective.

Change of Program Policy

Selective admission requirements must be met for admission to associate degree nursing program.

External Transfer Admission

Requirements for University admission must be met. Transfer students are evaluated on a case by case basis.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

After graduation, graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for registered nursing licensure.

Technical Associate Degree Requirements


The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA in both the major area of study and all course work attempted at Ohio University. A maximum of 15 credits earned through prior learning assessment may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements – Universitywide  section. You also must meet Ohio University BRICKS  requirements for associate degrees. (See Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section)

To earn a technical associate degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.

Major Hour Requirements


The associate in nursing major requires a minimum of 66.5 credit hours.
