Program Overview

Our advanced degree programs in mechanical engineering are designed to help you sharpen your technical focus and prepare you to succeed as a professional engineer with the knowledge and skills to create for good. Students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering have the opportunity to work on research with our renowned faculty on significant projects with access to state-of-the-art equipment. This research focuses primarily areas of energy and the environment, materials and manufacturing, and bioengineering. An advanced degree in mechanical engineering can lead to careers in many fields: design, patent law, manufacturing, research and development, biomedical engineering, technical consulting, product testing, technical sales, administration, and higher education are some of the most common.

Program Learning Outcomes

The expected outcomes of the graduate program of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Ohio University are to (a) prepare graduates for advanced careers in the engineering profession including doctoral studies, post-doctoral experiences and technical leadership positions, (b) develop the ability to effectively communicate graduate-level engineering concepts and applications, and (c) instill advanced engineering research and problem solving skills.

Opportunities for Graduates

Men and women graduates from the M.E. program at Ohio University have gone on to work for leading companies including Boeing, Daimler Chrysler, General Electric, Goodyear, Honda, and NASA, American Electric Power, Ariel, Caterpillar, Cummins, and Naval Air Systems command, among many others. Graduates have also undertaken doctoral studies at OU and other leading research universities.

Admission Requirements

The basic requirement for admission is a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Applicants holding degrees in closely related fields or from non-accredited engineering institutions may be required to compensate for deficiencies with additional coursework prescribed by the department. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test (recommended: 150 verbal/ 155 quantitative). Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for applicants whose native language is not English (required minimum score of 80; IELTS requires a minimum of 6.5 on all parts).

Three letters of recommendation are required from persons who can attest to the applicant’s academic and research aptitude.  Undergraduate grade point average (GPA), GRE and TOEFL scores, and engineering accomplishments are all considerations for admission as well as awards of tuition scholarships and stipends.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

The M.S. in Mechanical Engineering requires a minimum of 30 credit hours. During the first semester of study, students will develop a specific plan of study in consultation with their advisor, which will minimally include the following:

Other Required Coursework

Thesis/Research Hours

Students fulfilling degree requirements by writing a thesis must complete at least 9 hours of ME 6950. Students fulfilling degree requirements with a non-thesis project must complete a minimum of 3 hours of ME 6940.

Electives

All students must complete at least one elective course in an area of engineering outside of the Mechanical Engineering Department. With approval of the student’s supervisor, this elective may be from outside of the Russ College.

All students must complete additional graduate-level (5000+) ME courses to satisfy the minimum degree hours requirement.

Culminating Experience

Students must successfully complete and defend either a formal thesis or a non-thesis project.
