Certificate Overview:  The program in Community Dance emphasizes the creative process as a form of collaboration, through which dance can be an adaptable, inclusive, socially relevant practice. The Graduate Certificate in Community Dance prepares professionals ready to create and lead community dance projects focused on wellness, health, education, activism, or other initiatives. Courses include studio practice in dance technique and composition; theoretical, practical, and historical investigations of dance as a community form; dance research; and project planning. This program harnesses the resources of the School of Dance BFA and BA programs, which create a rich culture of studio practice and performance in which graduate students can deepen their understanding of their art form while developing professional competencies as arts administrators and leaders.

Certificate Learning Outcomes:

Students will:

  • evaluate, critique, and synthesize scholarship on community dance practices
  • demonstrate strong professional skills, including effective communication, creative problem-solving, organization, and administration
  • refine proficiency in dance-movement practices
  • create and lead dance experiences that foster community and enhance civic responsibility

Opportunities upon Completion:  Community dance integrates arts learning and participation into the lives of children, seniors, youth, and other populations. Graduates of the Certificate in Community Dance will understand the artistic discipline of dance as well as how to bring dance to a diverse range of communities. They will be entrepreneurial, able to create their own opportunities by developing proposals to meet the needs of organizations, schools, and community partners. Relevant career paths include community dance practitioner, arts administrator, cultural advisor/educator, director of recreational dance program, and community youth group leader.

Completion Requirements:  12 TOTAL credit hours

Required Courses:

  • DANC 6460: Community Dance Theory and Practice (3)
  • DANC 6260:Leading Community Dance (3)

Choose 1 of the following: (3 credit hours)  

  • DANC 5710: Histories of Modern & Postmodern Choreography
  • DANC 5711: Dance, Sexuality and Gender: Historical Perspectives
  • DANC 5550: Dance Ethnography: Intellectualizing the Body’s Motion
  • DANC 5750: Dance in Non-Western Expressive Cultures
  • DANC 6620: Seminar in Dance Studies Research

Choose 1 of the following: (1 credit hour)

  • DANC 5210: Graduate Modern Dance Technique
  • DANC 5250: Graduate African Dance Technique

Choose 1 additional studio dance course (minimum of 2 credit hours):

  • DANC 5150: Laban Movement Analysis (3)
  • DANC 5230: Graduate Dance Composition (2)
  • DANC 5360: Dance/Movement Lab (2)

Financial Aid Eligibility Information:

  • Degree-seeking students may use federal financial aid only for 1) coursework fulfilling requirements of their degree, including required elective hours, or 2) coursework toward a second financial aid-eligible program.
  • Students receiving federal financial aid may not take courses for this certificate unless they are also enrolled full-time (9 hours) in their degree program during the same academic term. Financial aid may be used for courses that count toward both degree requirements and the certificate.

Admission Requirements:  Admission to the Certificate in Community Dance requires an interview with the dance faculty and submission of a resume that details dance education and experience.

International Students:  This certificate program alone does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this certificate.
