Certificate Overview:  The Gender, Sexualities and Health Certificate addresses a critical need for online, post-baccalaureate programing for professionals in the health care, social work, education fields, and others who need a better understanding of best practices addressing the needs of women, LGBTQ persons, and survivors of violence. The GSH Certificate advances the scholarly knowledge and cultural competency of adult learners by helping them to develop critical thinking skills for serving diverse populations.  Courses cover the intersections of gender, sexuality, medicine, and health care.

CEUs through Equitas Health:  Some courses include CEUs offered through Equitas Health Institute.

Certificate Learning Outcomes:  Upon successful completion of the certificate, learners will be able to develop best practices to address the unique needs of diverse populations of women, LGBTQ persons, survivors of violence, and members of underrepresented groups.

Completion Requirements:  Minimum 12 semester hours (3 courses) required.

Choose 3 courses from the following:

  • WGSS 6000 - Gendered Bodies: The science around gender and sexuality has evolved significantly in recent decades, shaping and re-shaping expectations of health-care practices. Revisions to health-care practices are driven by both the science of human biology and as well as shifts in the social and political environment. This course explores the reflexive relationships and tensions between science and society and between healthcare practice and social practice as it plays out across gender, sexuality and race in US healthcare practices. (4 credits)
  • WGSS 6010 - Medicine, Science & Sexuality: This course studies how the history of medical and scientific approaches to sexuality, as well as contemporary medical practices, shape modern discourses of sexuality. Students examine how medicine shapes global discourses of sexuality within the context of the legacy of European colonialism. Students reflect on issues relevant to LGBTQ diversities, contraception and abortion, as well as sexual health, desire, and morality. (4 credits)
  • WGSS 6020 - Gender, Sexuality & Healthcare: This course is an introduction to selected topics in the intersections of gender, sexuality, medicine, and health care. Students will learn how to think about medical issues intersectionally, from epidemiological trends based on gender and sexuality, to contemporary health policy debates. (4 credits)
  • WGSS 6030 - Sexual Violence & Survivor Advocacy: Survey of the social scientific literature on the history of sexual violence and the evolution of its definitions; the social correlates of offending and victimization; the social patterns of different forms of sexual offending; the programs and policies aimed at reducing sexual violence, processing offenders, and meeting the therapeutic and social institutional needs of survivors. (4 credits)

Financial Aid Eligibility Information:  Students enrolled in this certificate are not eligible for federal financial aid.

Admission Requirements:  Applicants should complete a Graduate Non-Degree Application, available on the main Admissions page or the Graduate College website. Select the Gender, Sexualities & Health Certificate, program ND9989. NO GRE NEEDED.

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • GPA (or equivalent) of 3.0 or better in most recent degree program.
  • Official transcripts
  • English Proficiency. Students whose native language is not English also must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS academic). To be considered official, test scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to Ohio University. A TOEFL-iBT of 90 or IELTS composite of 6.5 across all bands is required. Admission Deadlines:  The deadline for submitting applications for a summer session is April 15. The fall semester deadline is July 15. The spring semester deadline is Nov. 20.

International Students:  This certificate program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.
