Program Overview:  The Master’s Degree program in Computer Education and Technology (CET) involves a minimum of 38 semester hours encompassing the study of the foundations of educational technology, instructional design, and innovation in education.

The program serves educators who hold a professional teaching license in another field and wish to complete a master’s of technology and/or seek a multi-age endorsement in Computer Technology. The program prepares technology facilitators to use technology more effectively in their teaching and to become technology leaders in their school or district. The program is Nationally Recognized by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

Additionally, the master’s degree program in Computer Education and Technology also serves those wishing to pursue advanced preparation in Computer Technology to be used in K-12, community college, business or higher education. Individuals with technical and training backgrounds not holding teaching licenses who wish to pursue work in instructional design, web design business and/or community college are also supported by the M.Ed. in Computer Education and Technology.

The underlying philosophy of the CET program is that computers and technology should be integrated into the curriculum or organizations as part of the total process of teaching and learning. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skill, and experiences to perform successfully as leaders in computer education and technology related fields.

Students with licensure may choose to obtain a multi-age endorsement as part of their master’s degree studies.

Students completing the master’s degree typically complete the program between 1-2 years, depending on number of courses taken each term.

Program Learning Outcomes: Emphasizing the knowledge, skills, and practices of educational technology, instructional design and innovative pedagogy, the program guides students toward:

• Understanding multimedia principles
• Understanding visual literacy for mediated instruction
• Understanding teaching and learning online
• Understanding leadership and professional development in technology settings
• Understanding assessment and evaluation in technology-rich classrooms

Opportunities for Graduates:  The program is committed to preparing students to be agents of change in various educational contexts and related fields such as government agencies, foundations, and private non-profit organizations. Program graduates typically assume positions as technology leaders within learning organizations.

Graduation Requirements:  38 semester hours are required for this master’s degree. No thesis is required. If undergraduate grade averages are met, no entrance exam is required.

• Workshop course: EDCT 6901
• Capstone courses (3 options): EDCT 6122 Master’s Portfolio, EDCT 6913 Master’s Action Research Project, EDCT 6950 Master’s Thesis

No Comprehensive Exam is required.

Culminating Experience:  There is no thesis or comprehensive exam, but the final course is a capstone project in which the student completes a portfolio, action research, or thesis.

Admission Requirements:

1. A 2.9 GPA in the undergraduate coursework of a bachelor’s degree.
2. An applicant whose GPA is below the levels stated above, can be considered by taking and reporting the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
3. An autobiography including a listing of future goals.
4. Three letters of recommendation.

International Students: This program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot issued based on admission to this program.
