Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study by Academic Unit

Degree Title and Name:  Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering

Program Name and Number:  Biomedical Engineering - MS7265

Department/Unit:  Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Delivery Mode:  Athens Campus

Terms of Entry:  Fall, Spring, Summer

Program Overview:   The program prepares students for doctoral study or industry positions at the interface of biology and engineering. Graduates are poised to become leaders in biomedical engineering and contribute to improving the human condition. Research areas include cellular and biomolecular engineering, biofilms, antimicrobials, nanotechnology, molecular simulations, biomedical information processing, and biomechanics. The program faculty draws from four colleges, with cross-college collaboration common.

Time to completion is typically 2 years for students entering with an engineering BS and 2-3 years for students entering with a non-engineering BS.

Program Learning Objectives:

  • Apply graduate-level concepts in engineering, biology, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, and physics to real-world problems.
  • Develop expertise in an area of research specialization.
  • Plan and execute a strategy to test a scientific hypothesis or proposed engineering solution, using prior published knowledge as a foundation.
  • Communicate advanced engineering knowledge and the results of novel research and development activities in professional venues.
  • Develop habits of collaboration, leadership, initiative, safe performance of work, and ethical conduct.

Opportunities for Graduates:  Doctoral study and/or positions in industry or government await graduates of the program.

Graduation Requirements:  Students must pass, with a least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, 18 semester hours consisting of:

  • two life science courses from the following: BIOS 5010, BIOS 5260, BIOS 5270, BIOS 5430, BIOS 5630, BIOS 5860, CHEM 5890, CHEM 5901, PBIO 5310, PBIO 5500
  • two biomedical engineering focus courses from the following: BME 5170, BME 5670, BME 5820, BME 5830, CHE 5800, CHE 7700, CS 5160, CS 6410, CS 6420, EE 5183, ME 5660
  • three common experience courses: BME 5000, BME 5010, ET 6020
  • four semester hours’ worth of technical elective courses in the student’s research focus area.

Note that no grade less than a C is acceptable in any course used to satisfy any graduation requirement

Culminating Experience: A written thesis must be prepared describing the student’s completed research work. The thesis must be defended orally before the student’s thesis committee. The student must earn a minimum of 14 thesis credit hours.

Admission Requirements: The GRE General Exam is recommended for everyone and is required unless applicants have a B.S. in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

Students with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline are eligible for admission.

Students with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0, or with degrees in a related area, will be carefully considered for admission by the BME Graduate Committee. Applicants with degrees in a related area shall meet the following prerequisites for admission:

  • Two-course sequence in physics that covers mechanics, electricity, and magnetism
  • Two-course sequence in calculus
  • One course in differential equations

Students without credit in differential equations will be considered for admission, and, if admitted, will be required to complete a course in differential equations with a grade of a B- or better by the end of their first semester in the program.

The application requires three letters of recommendation, one preferably from the applicant’s current supervisor and the others from individuals who have supervised, mentored or taught the applicant, or are otherwise familiar with the applicant’s academic ability and/or work experience.

International Students:  This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.
