Certificate Name and Number: Geospatial Information Science: Geospatial Analysis & Programming (CTGISA)

Department/Unit: Department of Geography

Delivery Mode: Online

Certificate Overview: Geospatial information science (GIScience) is the interdisciplinary field that studies the foundations of geographic concepts, and the design and application of geographic information systems (GIS) and allied geospatial technologies. This GIScience certificate is designed for professionals seeking advanced analytical and GIS programming skills to become competitive in the computational and software design aspects of GIS and mapping technology.

Graduation Requirements: Students must complete four courses (16 credit hours), including three core courses (with a minimum grade of “C”) and one elective. Each course is four credit hours. The core course, “Principles of GIS,” serves as a foundation for students without any background in GIS, and must be taken prior to all other courses.  Experienced professionals who can demonstrate proficiency in GIS can skip this foundation course and directly enroll in the advanced courses. Proficiency in GIS may be established by providing a college transcript showing proof of having earned a “C” grade or higher in an equivalent foundation course, or by passing a special GIS proficiency test designed for this certificate. A substitute elective course would be required to fulfill the 16-credit hour requirement.  The minimum GPA requirement for earning this certificate is 3.0.  Questions about the certificate should be directed to the Certificate Coordinator, whom enrolled students should also contact for verification of completion and awarding of the certificate.
